looks like apple has some competition

Breaking News: RIM Announces BlackBerry PlayBook Touchscreen Tablet

Certainly he might not be as charismatic as Apple CEO Steve Jobs, nor was the PowerPoint presentation as animated as Apple Keynote. Still, it was difficult for Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO ofResearch In Motion (RIM), to curb his enthusiasm just a few hours ago as he unveiled theBlackBerry PlayBook, a tablet computer.

With a 7-inch screen, dual facing HD cameras, WiFi + Bluetooth connectivity, RIM is hoping to dent the current dominance of Apple iPad. Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB RAM to boot, Lazaridis and fellow CEO, Jim Balsillie, are both confident that PlayBook will become a market leader, if not “the market leader”, for several reasons. One, running on QNIX kernel and a new OS BlackBerry OS 6, its never been easier for third party developers to create new PlayBook apps and add-ons. Second, with its popular email system and BBM instant messenger, corporations need not to adopt new standard or hardware. RIM will begin to roll out the BlackBerry PlayBook during the early part of 2011. After PlayBook’s announcement at the annual developer summit, RIM’s shares jumped 1.4%.
