At the height of the movie studio system, none held greater influence than Universal Studios and its founder Carl Laemmle. looks like apple has some competition
Certainly he might not be as charismatic as Apple CEO Steve Jobs, nor was the PowerPoint presentation as animated as Apple Keynote. Still, it was difficult for Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO ofResearch In Motion (RIM), to curb his enthusiasm just a few hours ago as he unveiled theBlackBerry PlayBook, a tablet computer.
With a 7-inch screen, dual facing HD cameras, WiFi + Bluetooth connectivity, RIM is hoping to dent the current dominance of Apple iPad. Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB RAM to boot, Lazaridis and fellow CEO, Jim Balsillie, are both confident that PlayBook will become a market leader, if not “the market leader”, for several reasons. One, running on QNIX kernel and a new OS BlackBerry OS 6, its never been easier for third party developers to create new PlayBook apps and add-ons. Second, with its popular email system and BBM instant messenger, corporations need not to adopt new standard or hardware. RIM will begin to roll out the BlackBerry PlayBook during the early part of 2011. After PlayBook’s announcement at the annual developer summit, RIM’s shares jumped 1.4%.

MAURIZIO CATTELAN MIDDLE FINGER STATUE
Emmanuel Perrotin represents some of the most well known contemporary artists in the world. His beautiful gallery in Paris which seems to be expending every year is a great destination if you’re in town. Lately he has been on a major roll, working with some of his top artists to set-up major exhibits such as the upcoming Maurizio Cattelan show at Palazzo Reale, in Milan. We’re not sure if this is part of the show since it’s not in the same area but this new sculpture was unveiled in front of the Milan stock exchange this week. The message seems to be clear and apparently it will be taken down if it hasn’t been done already.

Iphone 4 im getting it asap
The banner says it all, but just in case you REALLY did forget, today is the launch of the newiPhone 4 from Apple. The queue, the carnival-esque atmosphere, the legion of Apple employee egging buyers on… all the usual suspects will be at Apple (and retail partners) locations in USA, Germany, France, UK, and Japan. Of course as always, the Japanese consumers were the first to get the palm-size techno-wonderment, though not by foresight of what’s latest and greatest, but by default because of time differences. Then, there are the well documented mis-steps: the missing white variant and the crash of the pre-order system. Still, a minute dent in the cadre of rave reviews about the phone thus far. Now the question is, will the new iPhone outsell everything else Apple offered before up to this point in time? We will definitely have an answer in a few weeks.
Drake at Alife
It was suppose to be the “opening act” for Summer 2010. Instead, it became a sea of disappointed fans as the purported “riotous situation” forced New York City Police to shut the free Drake concert at South Street Seaport down even before it got underway. Fortunately, about 100+ New Yorkers were granted access to an intimate concert setting with the artist at ALIFE Courtyard Session. Hosted by Umbro as part of the A.R.C. x Umbro World Champions Space, the transformed Astroturf pitch became concert central for the evening. Featuring opening DJ duo, Vida & Valissa, with spinology extraordinaire DJ A-Trak as the headliner and of course, Drake. Lyrical and rhyme, the master of thoughtful ode expressed gratitude to the crowd gathered, the pioneers that came before him, and the love he received from ALIFE. In sum, a performance not likely forgotten, even by the most jaded New Yorkers, for a long time.

Condoms That Bite
A South African doctor is taking a bite out of crime. Literally. Dr. Sonnet Ehlers has designed a jagged female condom that snaps back.
The condom is inserted by women like a tampon and its jagged teeth-like hooks inside attach to a man's penis during intercourse.
Once it grabs hold, only a doctor can remove it. Ehlers hoped this will help authorities to catch offenders.
"It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it's on," Ehlers said.
"If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn't break the skin, and there's no danger of fluid exposure."
During the World Cup she plans to distribute 30,000 of the free devices. After the trial period they will be sold for $2 each.
"The ideal situation would be for a woman to wear this when she's going out on some kind of blind date ... or to an area she's not comfortable with," Ehlers said.
Critics suggest the condom puts women at risk of further violence from men trapped by the device and reminded women of their vulnerability.
Others accuse her of inventing a medieval device.
"Yes, my device may be a medieval, but it's for a medieval deed that has been around for decades," Ehlers said. "I believe something's got to be done... and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman."
